The City of Eternal Spring has evolved quite a bit over the last 20 years. If the world Medellin conjures visions of scenes from Narcos, you're behind and you should visit so you can get caught up!
Medellin is sophisticated and laid-back, it's got a perfect balance between high-energy and relaxation. The city is contending to take the crown for the Digital Nomad Capital of the world from Chiang Mai. There are no shortage of people in the city at coffee shops, eateries, and cowork spaces sitting on their laptops grinding. There is also no shortage of food, drinks, and of course SALSA! The city sits in a valley surrounded by mountains. Those views are sure to stop you in your tracks on a daily basis, and when the sun goes down, it shines like a jewel.
Where you'll live
Probably the wealthiest and safest neighborhood with a close proximity to the center, El Poblado definitely has its appeals. The neighborhood boomed in the early 90’s when Medellín’s elite fled the violence in Centro (the city center), and began building up luxurious apartment buildings on the eastern side of the Aburra Valley.
The streets are winding and tree-lined, complete with rippling creeks, nature paths and parks dotting the area.
El Poblado is home to boutique shops, and high-end shopping malls, including: Santa Fe, La Strada, Oviedo and El Tesoro.
For nightlife, the Zona Rosa surrounding Parque Lleras is full of clubs, nice restaurants and hip bars. Parque Pobaldo is spacious, and at night, full of young people drinking and chatting.
This Medellín neighborhood most closely resembles one that could be found in Panama City, Miami or Los Angeles. One can find doggie groomers, yoga studios and gourmet grocery stores. Well-dressed people drive SUV’s and dine al fresco.
Our apartments will be spread out around Poblado within a 10-15 minute walk to Parque Lleras. They will have 2-3 bedrooms, but each person will have their own bedroom
- HDMI Enabled Television
- Cookware, dinnerware, cutlery
- Access to laundry facilities
what you'll do
A few days after you arrive, you'll enjoy a welcome event (which includes lunch or dinner) and get to know your Wanderist family.
Get to know your town with a local helping you navigate the historic districts and let this fascinating city come to life through stories, explanations and urban legends. During the tour you will discover some of Medellin’s most traditional parks, squares and streets, while learning about the city’s history, culture and people.
There are a few things we absolutely HAVE to do while we're in Colombia - salsa, coffee, and Spanish!
We'll link up with our favorite Spanish teacher, Kelly for a group lesson so you can learn some basic phrases that you'll find useful. You'll find that in Medellin, many people do not speak English but are very patient with people who do not speak Spanish so long as they're trying.
Our group will do a salsa lesson together at one of the most fun salsa spots in Poblado, DanceFree. After class, it turns into a salsa club so you can show off what you learned.
You'll also get the chance to go behind the scenes of how the best coffee in the world is grown and produced...while riding horseback through the Andes mountains!
We'll travel to Jardín, a picturesque town set among green mountains, coffee farms, and beautiful waterfalls. You'll ride through breath-taking scenery to a small coffee farm up in the mountains with a jaw-dropping view of the valley below where we will learn about what is involved in producing great quality coffee.
Ever heard of a finca? It's a Spanish country house that's typically been around for a long time, sometimes centuries. We'll get out of the city life for a weekend and enjoy some time at a finca, living the laid back life of a Colombian.
If you talk to anyone that's been to Medellin, one of the things they'll say they enjoyed the most was taking time to visit the beautiful town of Guatape and climb El Penol. The town is just so beautiful and vibrant and the views from "the rock" are incredible. You'll get the chance to experience it for yourself.
