The beating heart of Kenya, Nairobi is the capital city. It's metropolitan charms include vibrant cultural life, fabulous places to eat, bustling night life, and an incredible national park right at its doorstep.
You'll be pleasantly surprised at how vibrant the city is and wowed by the wondrous wildlife you'll be lucky enough to spot during your stay. We can tell you from experience, there's almost nothing like watching a giraffe wander about in it's natural habitat or seeing a leopard climb a tree to eat its prey. Yes, this happens in real life, not just on National Geographic and you just might get to see it up close!
Where You'll Stay
If you're going to stay in Nairobi, you may as well stay in the safest area with the most fun at your doorstep. Kilimani is one of the safest neighborhoods located in the city. It's walkable and close to the city center. There are two malls located in Kilimani as well as a host of upmarket eateries. The neighborhood is also quite diverse. The United Nations and an International School are located in Kilimani and, as a result, there are expats living in the area from all over the world. It's not uncommon to run into French, Australian, and American expats in the malls and eateries in Kilimani.
The apartment building is a few blocks away from the major mall and lots of restaurants. Our apartments will be multi-bedroom units that feature a living room, kitchen, and dining area. The building includes the following features:
- Washing Machine
- 40" Flat Screen Television
- Security Guard
- Concierge Services
- Stove, Oven, and Microwave
- Cookware, Eatery, Cutlery
What You'll Do
During your first week, you'll get to know your Wanderist family and the city of Nairobi, starting with a Welcome Dinner. Delicious food and drink is a surefire way to bring people together, no?
Get to know Nairobi during a walking tour with a local and visit one of the Cultural Center to learn about the 16 major tribes in Kenya through exposure to the way they live and celebrate life.
Get introduced to the Entrpreneur/Digital Nomad world in Nairobi. You will be invited to a networking session at our coworking space, iHub, where you'll meet the people driving technological innovation. There are some really interesting businesses being sparked at iHub and it's a spot that many industry leaders visit to do talks and get to know the minds behind the start-ups in Kenya.
Giving back to the communities we visit is very important to us. Our group will spend time volunteering in Kibera, the largest slum in Kenya suffering from overcrowding, unemployment, and lack of basic necessities like electricity and running water. Our Founder, Libryia, had the chance to volunteer at a school in Kibera and was incredibly impressed with the students at the Cheery Center.
We want you to have unique experiences that cater to your interests. You'll have the choice between a Foodie Experience, an Adventure Experience, or a Nature Lovers Experience. We promise, all three will be incredible.
Also, you can NOT go to Kenya and miss out on doing a safari! We will be in Kenya during migration season - the best time for safari!
Maasai Mara is named in honor of the Maasai people (the ancestral inhabitants of the area) and their description of the area when looked at from afar: "Mara," which is Maa (Maasai language) for "spotted," an apt description for the circles of trees, scrub, savanna, and cloud shadows that mark the area.
Each day, you'll go on game drives to give you the best possible opportunity to spot the Big 5. Can you name them all? You'll be able to after this safari!
In preparation of our visit to the Mara, we'll have a crash course on taking amazing photos with a local photographer. Make sure you bring a good camera along! Christine, of The Art of Wanderlusting, will teach us basic techniques for getting the absolute best shots of the Mara, the wildlife, and the unbelievable sunsets.
Christine will actually be with us throughout the entire month, taking photos during all of our experiences. You can focus on enjoying yourself, she'll focus on capturing your memories.
Throughout the month, we'll sprinkle informal events as well (i.e. Taco Tuesday, Game Night) and get into some local events, including art gallery socials, live music events, and parties.
We do want you to have a little time to explore on your own as well, of course. We'll give you plenty of details on other things to do.
Where You'll Work
In between all the fun, we'll get some work done. Our cowork office will be a short walk or Uber ride from your apartment. It's one of the hottest spots for digital nomads and people in the tech space in Nairobi.
iHub is an Innovation hub and hacker space for the technology community in Nairobi that was started in March 2010 by Erik Hersman a TED fellow and Entrepreneur. He is also the CEO of BRCK, a hardware and cloud services technology platform that delivers rugged and reliable connectivity solutions in the most demanding environments.
There are sure to be networking and mastermind events in this space, and we'll be sure to be in attendance. Heck, we may tap a few of you may even host talks!
